Chesed: Kindness
Exhibit Dates: October 16–23, 2024 | Reception: October 20, 3–5 PM
In its eighth year, Under One Roof brings together local organizations in Nashville to create artwork around a chosen theme to be exhibited in our sukkah during the Jewish holiday of Sukkot. Our “roof” is the JCC’s community sukkah—a temporary structure built during the festive fall harvest of Sukkot.
The sukkah reminds us of the fragility and temporary nature of life and helps us focus on what is most important. Last year, more than 30 organizations participated, including Arts Bellevue, Big Brothers Big Sisters of Middle TN, Friends Life Community, the Nashville Opera, The Porch, and West End Synagogue.
The theme for this year’s Under One Roof is Chesed—a Hebrew word meaning “kindness” or love between people. In Jewish ethics, it is used for love or charity between people. Chesed in this latter sense of “charity” is considered a virtue on its own.
